Uttarakhand: Char Dham Yatra Booms, But Faces Hurdles
Uttarakhand's famed Char Dham pilgrimage season is witnessing an unprecedented boom, with over a lakh devotees thronging Kedarnath in the first week itself. However, this surge in religious tourism has brought its own set of challenges:
Managing the Masses:
The sheer number of pilgrims has led to severe traffic congestion, particularly around Kedarnath. Authorities are scrambling to implement crowd management strategies, including stricter regulations and one-way traffic routes.
Safety Concerns:
The influx has raised safety anxieties, with 11 fatalities reported in the first week. To mitigate this, officials are urging mandatory registration for all pilgrims and are emphasizing pre-yatra health checkups, especially for those with underlying health conditions.
Environmental Toll:
Environmentalists warn that unregulated mass tourism can put a strain on the delicate Himalayan ecosystem. They advocate for sustainable tourism practices and a cap on the daily number of pilgrims allowed on the routes.
New Rules and Regulations:
To ensure order amidst the surge, authorities have imposed new restrictions. These include a complete ban on videography within 50 meters of temple premises and a crackdown on filming reels for social media platforms. Officials are also considering a permit system to regulate pilgrim numbers.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court continues to express disapproval of the state government's handling of the recent forest fires. The apex court has termed their approach "lackadaisical" and demanded a more comprehensive fire prevention and management plan.
